The Minnesota Memorial

Did you know:

About the National Military Park in Vicksburg, Mississippi?

We recently visited this inspiring Civil War site Memorial Park.  It consists of 661 Monuments, including Minnesota’s, 594 bronze markers, 70 bronze castings, 18,000 headstones (in the National Cemetery) the restored Gunboat the U.S.S. Cairo (the first Ship to be sunk by an electrically detonated mine) and 141 artillery pieces.

You drive through beautifully maintained grounds on a self guided tour, stopping where you like to observe the monuments, the markers, the artillery, and the fields of battle.  The tour took us about 2 hours, including stops at the Tourist center and the U.S.S. Cairo museum.

If you are in this area, it is truly worth your time spent for a visit.

Check out their web site.  It’s excellent!!

Do you know?  where and about the National WWI Memorial???   This editor didn’t until a weekend trip to Kansas City, Mo recently.

The Memorial was dedicated in the summer of 1921 as part of the American Legion’s third National Convention.  Present for the dedication in addition to members of the American Legion, were General Pershing and Lieutenant General Baron Jacques of Belgium, General Armando Diaz of Italy, Marshal Ferdinand Foch of France,  and Admiral Lord Earl Beatty of Great Britain.

The Memorial consists of a large tower (217 ft), elevator included, a museum housing items of “The Great War”, plaques bearing quotations, and a wall with the busts of the Generals present for the dedication.

The Memorial had fallen into decay for a time, but has now been restored by the good taxpayers of Kansas City, with new grounds with pools and fountains, and is overlooking a newly restored Central Station (the old train station).

I was told this is the only Memorial built to honor all of the servicemen of all of the countries involved in WWI, not only in the United States, but in the Free World!!

It is very impressive and very much worth your time to visit the next time you get in the Kansas City Area!!
